Stewart Falls

Emily and I took an amazing hike today up to Stewart Falls. Neither of us had been there before, but went along with a few friends of ours. The falls are located deep in Provo Canyon, near Sundance. I love Provo Canyon, and try to spend as much time up there as I possibly can; in reality, that means I go mountain biking there about once a week if I'm lucky. Fall is really the best time to be there, in my opinion, when the leaves begin to change colors and the heat is more subdued. The fact that this type of scenery is so close amazes me.

Anyway, the falls are about forty five minutes from where we parked our cars, up a narrow, dusty trail. The trail follows a long, open valley that ends with Stewart Falls and a towering cliff lined with aspens. The top looks out over this valley and parts of Sundance. Of course, we had to get our pictures taken under the pummeling waters and make the hike back with water squishing in our shoes, but we had a great time. I couldn't get over the fact how lucky we are to live so close to this type of scenery! These falls were amazing, but there are hundreds of other falls, valleys, and mountains in this region as or even more impressive than what we saw today. I've always thought that it's too bad most people are unaware of the nature in their own backyard, but their ignorance means less people and impact in these places, so maybe it's for the best. They can always go "hike the 'Y.'"
