Gimps

I wouldn't say that Sean and I are accident prone people, but I would say that we enjoy activities that are prone to accidents. A couple of weeks ago, I went up to Miller Motorsport Park (I already alluded to this in a previous post) and crashed a go-kart. I didn't exactly tell the whole story. The go-karts are really fast--you can get up to 40-45 mph. There was one corner at the beginning of the loop that you could take almost at full speed. So, after the first time around I decided that I would pick up the pace--test the limits you could say. Well, the other thing to know about this corner is that you can't see the other side because of barriers that are set up to ensure that no one goes flying off the course. So, I'm going 30-35 mph around this corner and all of a sudden I see one of my company's V.P.'s at a dead stop in the middle of the track...less than 5 feet away. I couldn't stop, and I couldn't get out of the way, so I braced myself for impact. The go-karts didn't have seat belts, so I flew up against the steering wheel and then landed back in my seat. It knocked the wind out of me completely. I haven't had the wind knocked out of me in years--I'm not too fond of the feeling. Both of us pull of the track to regain our breath (he also had the wind knocked out of him). Eventually we were able to go again. I ended up with a monster bruise from where I hit my steering wheel and a bit of a sore back. But, I'm pretty much better now. The V.P. broke his rib, but luckily he's a young guy and isn't hurt too bad.

This week it's Sean's turn to be gimpy. On Friday, Sean went mountain biking up at Sundance with his friend Ben. Towards the end of the day, they were going down this really narrow single track at a ridiculously fast pace. Sean's pedal clipped a root, and his bike "exploded" from under him--sending him crashing into the woods. He was going so fast, he bounced once and then rolled to a stop. The bike is fine, but we're pretty sure he either broke or bruised his rib. He's doing fine--we're still able to do active stuff like hiking, but he's taking a break from mountain biking for a bit (he's hoping that he'll be fine by Saturday so he can go again).

It's a good thing body's heal, right?

Sometimes I wonder why I'm not athletic. And then posts like this remind me of how many bones I've broken in my previous attempts.
